At yesterday's press conference with Toshiba, Bill Gates announced the following:
“The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format,” Gates confirmed. “We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.” source: TeamXbox

I think this would be advantageous on MS's Part. They need to take full advantage of the hardware thats hitting the market right now.

Yeah, I agree...they need as much ammo on their side to compete with the PS3.
