Humax PMP with DirecTV support

Pmp
Humax's PMP was designed to use content offered by pay TV providers and first up is DirecTV with their new DirecTV 2Go service.  The Humax PMP features a 4-inch widescreen LCD, high capacity hard drive (to be specified according to content partner), supports MPEG 1/2/4, DivX, WMV9 with WMDRM10 support, and is USB 2.0 compatible.

The new DirecTV service allows for a direct connection to the DirecTV DVR and users can transfer recorded content to the PMP.  The device will also feature a DirecTV approved playlist interface that's similar to the one offered on their own receivers.

Expect to see a release later on this year along with the DirecTV 2Go service at different retail and Internet stores.

AOL and XM form joint venture

AollogoAmerica Online and XM Satellite Radio AND Anschutz Corp have formed a joint venture to offer live and on-demand concerts and comedy shows via the Internet, satellite, wireless, and other platforms.  The company, Network Live, was created in hopes of bringing digital entertainment content to users anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

This joint venture is yet another example of the growing trend of companies embracing online video.  Earlier announcements yesterday included CBS offering a 24 hours news network over high-speed broadband lines and last week Nickelodeon launched an on-demand service that promises to bring up to 20 hours of new kids programming every week.

Tivo slashes prices?

Tivo_1It's being reported that Tivo is cutting prices on its entry-level DVRs from $199 to $99.  Costs on the 80 and 140 hour boxes will remain the same, but customers can still receive a $100 rebate on the larger boxes.  The cost-cutting measures have been put into place due to the ever increasing competition from cable companies in the DVR industry.  The company recently announced the appointment of a new President and CEO.

Verizon's Fios video service signs Time Warner

In my area of Pennsylvania, Verizon has been digging up everyone's lawns and installing fiber-optic cables, all in preparation of launching its Fios video service.  In my earlier post about the problems with IPTV, I estimated that Verizon would be the first to implement mainstream IPTV.

"Terry Denson, Verizon's vice president of programing and marketing for Fios television, said in an interview with Reuters last month that Verizon would offer about 300 video and audio channels, along with about 2,000 video-on-demand titles, by the time it launches the service broadly next year." source: Reuters

Well, yesterday Verizon announced that they have signed their first video deal with Time Warner which will allow it to carry several Turner channels, including CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. Time Warner also owns the HBO pay channel.

Currently, Qualcomm is pursuing a similar project but using its own money to finance the project.

New way to watch TV - Slingbox

Slingbox_1I first saw the Slingbox when I was checking out CNet footage of the Consumer Electronics Show this year.  What is a Sling box? It's an electronic device that "placeshifts" the signal from your TV, satellite or your DVR to any computer or laptop...at home, work, wherever, as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection.  Basically, streaming real-time TV to another computer.

CNet has done a review, along with the Wall Street Journal and PC Mag.  The reviews are very promising for this new product.

Sling Media has promised that in a couple of months it will be compatible with select PDAs, smartphones, and Macs.

3-D TV in your living room

Whenever I want to view a movie in 3-D, I have to go to an IMAX theater.  That may change in the near future and consumers will be able to watch 3-D movies in the comfort of their own homes sans those tacky 3-D glasses. Deep Lights, a company currently working on the technology, plans to introduce a HD3D screen at next year's Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

"Ordinary TV sets deliver 500 lines of resolution. Most high-definition screens reach 1,050. The HD3D hits 1,280 lines and counting - which means better picture quality than that of any TV available today, all in a convincing impression of the third dimension. And here's the seriously trippy part about the new screen, which Deep Light plans to introduce at next winter's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: multiple "blades" of video enable one screen to show different programs to different viewers, at the same time."

Good Morning America in High-Def

Morning program, Good Morning America, will be launched in HD in September beating its competition to the high-def format.  NBC's Today show most likely won't make the transition to HD until early next year while CBS doesn't currently plan on offering its Early Show in high-definition at all.

"GMA ’s embrace of HD is an important milestone for the still-fledgling broadcast medium. Weekday network programming in HDTV has been nonexistent, with the exception of CBS’ HD broadcasts of The Young and the Restless . The costs associated with HD production, typically adding an average 15% to a program’s production budget, and the belief that the heavily female daytime audience is not clamoring for HD (most HD programming centers on sports and movies, both which have strong appeal to male viewers) have made weekdays a virtually HD-free zone. But ABC says it has detected a burgeoning interest among daytime viewers in the broadcasts."

Problems with IPTV

What is IPTV (Internet Protocol TV)? In a nutshell, it's TV over the Internet.

The news has been littered with reports on problems with IPTV.  Today's latest article focuses on SBC's deployment of the technology, labeled "Project Lightspeed".  Apparently, the project is not living up to its name due to various legal, technical, and programming problems.  It's unlikely that the company will meet its goal of offering IPTV to 13 states within the next three years.  Microsoft has recently run into problems as well, with Austrialian telephone company, Telstra, canceling a field test of the product.  Swisscom, another overseas telephone company, has delayed the deployment of Microsoft's IPTV technology until 2006.

Many companies (and of course, Microsoft) are very hesitant to blame the problems....

20th Century Fox, distributor of the film, confirmed that a script was being worked, but that there was no release date or production date.

TivotoGo now on Microsoft devices

TivotogoTivo announced today that its TivoToGo service is now availabe for Microsoft devices.  TivoToGo is now available on Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers, as well as certain Windows Mobile-based Smartphones, and Pocket PCs.

TivoToGo was announced earlier this year and allowed users to shift recorded TV programs to a personal home computer in the same home.  Now users will be able to travel with these programs and watch them on their portable devices.  Microsoft is hoping that this feature will increase sales of portable media players.

~I don't own a Tivo, but I own a ReplayTV that I bought back in 2000.  I have a HD DVR from my Comcast that I am currently using.  I know that Comcast and Tivo signed a distribution deal earlier this year, so I'm wondering if Comcast customers will ever be able to take advantage of TivoToGo in the future.  I would definitely be interested in this service.~

New high-speed standard will enable HDTV streaming

Due to bandwidth limitations, streaming HD content over the web has been impractical.  That's all about to change due to the new high-speed standard called VDSL2 that was ratified by the International Telecommunication Union.

VDSL2 is said to reach speeds of up to 100Mbps downstream and upstream.  Currently, cable and DSL can only reach up to 3Mbps and DVDs take up 4-7Mbps and MPEG-2 HDTV content requires over 19Mbps. This new standard can operate on standard copper telephone lines with existing equipment.

BellSouth has already announced plans to use this with systems they've installed over the past 10 years.

Tuner chip enables TV on PDAs

Microtune's new multi-band tuner chip , the MT 2260, will be targeted for cell phones, PDAs, and other multi convergence devices.  It will permit users to watch multi-channel broadcast TV with full-motion digital pictures and CD-quality sound.

"Currently sampling with major handset manufacturers, the new MT2260 is the first single-chip tuner that enables handheld devices to operate across the networks allocated for mobile broadcast TV services in both Europe and in the U.S. In fact, the MT2260 is also the first single-chip DVB-H tuner sampling today to support the U.S. frequency range for mobile broadcast TV services. As a strategic advantage, this multi-band capability permits manufacturers to develop handset designs for global markets without the added expense and duplication of effort to design market-specific devices."

TV's future is here, although it needs work | CNET News.com

Link: TV's future is here, although it needs work | CNET News.com.

This article gives a great review of Akimbo, the service that allows you to download online content to a Tivo-like box.  Although the writer acknowledges that the concept is a great idea, apparently Akimbo has had hard time following through due to the networks' reluctance to provide content (some of Akimbo's content includes "Veg TV", Adven TV, the first on-demand Turkish station in the U.S.).  It also doesn't help that Akimbo overcharges for its services.  You have to pay for the box, a monthly $10.....

6:15 pm - Shrek 2

8:00 pm - Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

10:30 pm - Bad Boys II

1:00 am - Identity

~All four of these movies should look great on HD.  I've already seen Shrek 2 in HD and it is truly stunning.  I believe this is the premiere of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on HD, so if I'm home I will definitely watch it or at least record it on my HD DVR.~

DirecTV Customers protesting HD Pricing

Some DirecTV customers are protesting the pricing of the NFL Sunday Ticket that DirecTV offers.  About 500 customers have signed a petition notifying the company that they will cancel their NFL Sunday Ticket if the company continues to charge them an additional $99 to watch football telecasts in high-definition, a format that the country has to migrate to anyway.

DirecTV has pointed out that the HD package does include other special features such as selecting different camera angles, calling up to eight games on the screen, and watching highlights of the game after it's over.

~Even though HD has been out for some time now, people are still suffering some of the problems that many early-adopters suffer through....a markup on the cost of the new technology.  Cable and satellite companies feel that they can charge additional prices for some of these services as long as there are different video standards.  Until HD becomes more mainstream, you can expect these type of additional costs.~

Lawmakers split on subsidized digital TV converters

Now that a date has been set for all broadcasters to switch to digital, December 31, 2008, the subject of subsidizing digital TV converters has become a problem. Key Republicans are ready to set aside $500 million dollars for those households that make less than $30,000/year and have no cable or satellite service.  Democrats feel that anyone buying a box should receive a subsidy since the idea of a digital tax would not go over very well.

Dave Chappelle says he is not crazy...

Link: Yahoo! TV News & Gossip -.

In an interview with Time magazine, Dave Chappelle sets the record straight proclaiming that he is not crazy and he is not smoking crack, but simply stressed out.  He also said that he is not in a mental facility, but that he did have a 40 minute visit with a psychiatrist.

It was also confirmed that he was having problems with the direction of the show and did not say when he would return.  The president of Comedy Central has already indicated to staff that he didn't believe there would be a new season in 2005.

I get the feeling that Mr. Chappelle would probably be happier being a little-known comic making movies like Half-Baked again.  Some people are simply not equipped to deal with this type of pressure and he's obviously one of them.  Fleeing the country is a strange way of dealing with problems on your job.  Usually, I just go and sit in my car and call my husband and curse loudly for 20 minutes and then go back in.  Maybe if I was making $50,000,000, I would react differently...

Trial by Jury in Danger........

There are rumors that the 3rd spinoff of Law and Order, Trial by Jury is in danger of being cancelled.  Apparently, the ratings aren't that great.  Trial by Jury stars Bebe Neuwirth and also starred Jerry Orbach before his unfortunate passing.  I've watched a number of episodes and I enjoy the show...I just think there are too many Law and Orders and CSIs.

As you can see below, I'm a big Law and Order fan:

Dave Chapelle

What's goin on with *Dave Chapelle*? The third season of the *Chapelle Show*was supposed to premiere on Comedy Central on May 31st, but production has been suspended indefinitely. I read a couple of months ago that his writers were having a hard time coming up with material, but it's only season 3. Look at the *Simpsons*, they've been on the air for 278 seasons. You don't hear about those writers having a hard time.

They also had finally announced a release date for the second season on DVD and now that's been pushed back indefinitely. Apparently the studios want to time the release with the premiere of the third season.

Oh well….I hope they can get everything together. The first two seasons were hilarious, if not somewhat tainted by the thousands of Corporate America geeks who felt the need to yell out "*I'm Rick James, B*&!$"* every time you
asked them a question.

The Best shows on TV

Law and Order has the best shows on TV. I'm really liking the new one that comes on on Fridays, Trial by Jury. Bebe Neuwirth is one bad chick!

I really wish I could watch Monk , but ever since Sharona left, I can't. I find that to be funny since I always thought Sharona looked like such a skank. Now I miss her. Oh well, that's one less show taking up room on my DVR.
