MobiBlu B153 - 146 hours of music on one charge

B153 2
When I saw the battery life on the MobiBlu B153, I was amazed. 146 hours on a single charge is astounding when compared to other mp3 players. The B153 comes in three models, 512MB ($89), 1GB($99.99), and 2GB($129.99). The two larger models come in black, while the smallest is in white.

Billed as having the longest battery life in the world, the MobiBlu plays MP3, WMA, and WMA (DRM). You also get a FM tuner with recording abilities, voice recording, SRS WOW High Definition Sound, and line-in encoding. All in all, it sounds like you get a lot for your money. So if you've haven't fallen under the spell of an iPod, this definitely looks like a mp3 player worth checking out.

Sirius S50 - yet another handicap

Siriuss50A
Back in August when posting about the Sirius S50, I questioned the portability of the device.  It appeared that you needed to buy a $100 docking station to dock it in order to receive signals.  Well, that wasn't the only handicap of the device.  Sirius created another huge negative for the S50 that came in the form of some last minute updates to the firmware.  There's a one hour maximum for any one single recording, you can't record music via scheduling (shows can though), recording of songs are limited to one at a time, and 20 scheduled shows (up to 2 hours a session) is the max allowed.  If you try to record more than twenty you are prompted to delete existing recordings or the delete the scheduled show you're trying to record.

Packard Bell's AudioStar - $190 DAP

Source: Chip Chick

Audiostar
Packard Bell joins the million other companies that have released a DAP device.  Labelled the AudioStar, this coin-sized voice recorder/mp3 player features a 1.8 inch color LCD and only weighs 49 grams.  It supports the "Play for Sure" technology so you'll be able to use music subscription services like Napster, which is a plus.  But there is one big negative (besides the measly 10 hour battery life):  In order to view a video file, you must first convert it to the Packard Bell's "MTV" format.

It has 1024MB of flash memory and comes with earphones, USB cable, and charger.

The Grab 'n' Go Player comes with composite, SCART, and S-Video cables.  There's SPDIF cable for 5.1 audio systems, but strangely enough a component cable wasn't included.  It's also equipped with USB on the Go technology making it possible to connect a USB memory drive or mp3 player directly to the player and copy data. iPod sales drive Apple's profits to $320 million

Ipod_1Apple announced today that third quarter profits more than quintupled to $320 million, largely attributed to the sales of its extremely popular iPod.  The company sold over 6 million iPods in the third quarter, six times as many as it sold a year ago.

The company has long said that it expects the iPod's popularity to rub off on its desktops and laptops, which together still account for less than 5 percent of all personal computers sold. The hope is that customers who have been introduced to Apple through the music player will reconsider the company's computers. To encourage that, in January Apple released a stripped-down personal computer, the Mac mini, that sells for as little as $499. source: NYTimes

Steve Jobs calls family of teenager killed for iPod

Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, called the family of Christopher Rose, a teenager that was killed this weekend in Brooklyn, NY over an iPod.  The teenager was walking with friends to a bus terminal in order to head to Pennsylvania, where Christopher had been sent to school by his parents so he could thrive in a safer environment.  As many as 12 teenagers attacked the young man and his friends and stabbed Christoper two times in his chest.  The fight originally started after the boys demanded an iPod from the teenager.

Errol Rose, Christopher Rose's father, received a call from Steve Jobs who spoke with the father for several minutes.

"Calling him by his first name, Mr. Jobs asked how Mr. Rose was doing, he said, and conveyed his sympathies. "He told me that he understood my pain," Mr. Rose said. "He told me if there is anything - anything - anything he could do, to not be afraid to call him. It really lightened me a bit."" Source: NYTimes.com

AOL's Live 8 streaming a success

AOL has broken its own records with this weekend's streaming of the Live 8 concerts.  The online company was able to deliver seven feeds of the concerts without any major problems.  The peak amount of simultaneous users reached 175,000 and many switched from MTV coverage because of that network's emphasis on its hosts rather than the music.

"AOL also managed to make the experience compelling, said one fan, Maria Miceli, a Westlake, Ohio, office manager who switched off the MTV coverage because she felt it focused too much on its hosts and too little on the actual music." via| Associated Press
