Pink PSP is on its way

Pinksonypsp
Why can't these companies just release their products in a variety of colors from the very beginning? Anywhoo...it looks like our overseas gamers will be able to pick up a pink PSP come October 27.

Nintendo DS Lite in pink

Main Lite Pink
Check out the Nintendo DS Lite in pink (for some odd reason it reminds me immediately of the pink Razr). This is sure to be a big seller with the female gamers when it's released on July 20th...unfortunately that's the release for Japan.

Nintendo DS Lite released early?

Trakandslite
It looks like some customers (as reported by Cheap Ass Gamer) have had luck in scoring Nintendo DS Lites a little early. The official release date is June 11, but some lucky people have been able to pick up units at Walmart and Target. No word on why these particular stores have offered them before the street date, but if you feel like testing your luck, you may want to head over to your local stores and check it out.

Europe to get black Nintendo DS Lite

Ds Black
You would think that Japan would be getting the black Nintendo DS first, but it looks like Europe will have the honors come this June 23rd.  Nintendo has announced that Europe will get a black DS Lite along with a Polar White unit this June.  Other colors include a navy and a light blue (offered in Japan).

PS3 launch price at $500?

This isn't set in stone....just a few guesses from a couple of analysts and developers who seem to think the PS3 will debut with a price of 500 big ones.  I'm fully expecting $500 price point, especially with the included Blu-Ray drive.  With the recent unveilings of a couple of Blu-Ray players that cost as much as $1800, $500 for a player plus a video game system seems like a steal.  What do you think?

iRiver G10, new handheld gaming device

IIriverg10 saw the iRiver G10 on Akihabara News.  My first thought was the Gizmondo, but I guess I should be a little fair and actually give them a chance to release this device.  The iRiver G10 will run on Windows Mobile 5 and will have a WVGA screen (800x480), along with 4 to 8 GB of storage.

It looks like people are comparing this to the PSP and the Nintendo DS, but I seriously doubt that it's on the same level.  First, we would need to see what games would be released for it.  It's a pretty safe bet that we would see the same caliber games that we see for the DS or the PSP (please, no jokes on the PSP's library of games).  The enormous amount of storage is a promising sign, however.....but better suited for viewing movies or television shows.

Neo 5 in 1 pad for PSP

Psp-4In1Pad
Popular gaming accessory maker, Lik-Sang is now accepting pre-orders on the Neo 5in1 pad for the PSP.  These little device allows you to use Compact Flash, SD, or MMC cards with your PSP so that you can take advantage of the cheaper memory formats instead of using the Memory Sticks.  Don't worry, you can still use your Memory sticks through a pass-through port.  Using 4 AA batteries or rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries, it also features a built-in charger and a turbo and force recharge button.  You can also use it as a USB card reader with a PC or Mac.

Lik-Sang will start shipping the Neo 5in1 pad when its stock arrives on Feb 1.  The site says Feb. 1, 2005 (but I'm assuming that's a typo).  This will set you back $99.90.

Korean PSP/Micro killer? - Cenix GMP-M6

5407 Large
I can't decide whether this is supposed to compete with the PSP or the Game Boy Micro...or both.  Either way, the Cenix GMP-M6 features a miniSD slot, 2" widescreen TFT-LCD display, FM tuner, 6 hours of gameplay (20 hours of music playback).  It supports MP3, WMA, Ogg, Audio ASF, MPEG-4, and IMA-ADPCM formats.

It's reported that there are 50,000 games available for download (that sure beats both systems, doesn't it?).  Selling for only $193, you can get this tiny device in either black or white (whenever it becomes available)

Neuros MPEG4 Recorder 2

Source: MobileTechReview

Mpeg42 Qtr
If Santa brings me a PSP for Christmas, I might consider purchasing this device (depending on how much of a hassle it is to get movies to the PSP via conventional methods).  The Neuros MPEG4 Recorder 2 is a recorder that creates the appropriate video file straight from the content.  It's basically a VCR without the tape since it records to your memory card.  You can connect it to your cable box, DVR, VCR, DVD, camcorder, etc. and it will record to your memory card which can then immediately work with your PSP or any other device that is compatible with a memory stick or CF card (like my Dell Axim x50).

It can record in VGA, QVGA, and WQVGA.  You can purchase it for $149.99.

iRiver's answer to the PSP

Source: Mobilemag

5112 Large
I guess iRiver is extremely jealous of the overwhelming success of the Gizmondo (sarcasm).  The company normally focuses purely on music products but has decided to delve into the gaming handheld market.  The company has developed a portable gaming handheld that will have WiBro incorporated.  WiBro is a wireless broadband internet technology that was developed in Korea, and has a couple of advantages over WiMax.

There's not too much information on the device, but it should be released in the late summer of 2006.

PSP charging dock

Pspsmartchargerwhite1 M
Brando, which makes great screen protectors by the way, is selling a PSP Smart Charging Dock.  For $15.00, you can get a dock that will hold your PSP and charge it at the same time.  This dock looks like it could light up an entire room, too, but is also useful if you're tired of holding your PSP while watching a long movie.  It comes in black and for those lucky people who have the ceramic white PSP, they'll be happy to know they can order it in white as well.

Ice Creme for iPods and PSPs

Prdicecremebeauty1

Is your iPod scuffed up or has some minor damage?  Has your shiny black PSP lost its luster?  An Ice Creme solution may be what you need to make your devices look new again.  Ice Creme is a solution that removes surface abrasion and scratches from acrylic and bright metal surfaces.  You can use Ice Creme on devices like the iPod, iBook, PDAs, and cell phones.
The regular formula is for plastic products and lightly damaged bright metal. The "M" version adds a special metal refinishing pad which can restore severe bright metal surface damage - like the iPod's bright metal back panel.  Not for use on iPod mini, painted or anodized surfaces. Both versions include Optex application and polishing cloths.

You can purchase the Ice Creme solution for $20.95 and it includes 2 1 oz. bottles of polishing compounds and 2 application/polishing cloths.  The Ice Creme "M" is available for  $25.95 and includes the same items as the regular solution but with the addition of a bright metal finishing pad.

Resident Evil 5 for PS3 and Xbox 360

Residentevil4_1It's been confirmed that Resident Evil 5 is currently in production for the PS3 and Xbox 360.  There's no word on whether the game will be available for Nintendo's Revolution.  The game will be running in high-definition which the Nintendo Revolution does not support, so it's hard to say whether we will see it on the console.  However, there's still hope:

"Capcom has a multi-platform strategy in order to provide Capcom products to as many users as possible," a spokesperson for the company told IGNcube. "Given this strategy, it is certainly feasible that other platforms could be considered at some point."

via| IGN

~Even with the ability to play all the old classics, will anyone buy the Nintendo Revolution?  Each week it seems like it keeps getting left behind when it comes to releases of popular games for the next-gen consoles.~

Xbox 360 allows parents to restrict games?

Xbox360tag_5It's being reported that the Xbox 360 will come equipped with the ability to allow parents to restrict games based on the age restriction of the game.  Parents can just put the age of the child playing the console into the device and the game will not be viewed.  There will be four categories: age 12 and up, age 15 and up, age 18 and up, and all ages.

The console will also be able to control access to chat sites as well.

September release date for European PSP

Psp_1_1Just in case, you didn't know, European gamers will finally be able to buy Sony's PSP in their home country this September.  The value pack will include a remote control, headphones, 32MB duo memory stick, and a disk with game, video, and music demos.

via|Joystiq
~It will be interesting to see if the PSP will overtake the Nintendo DS' hold on the market.  The DS costs almost half as much and many of the PSP games will be a little more expensive..not to mention a little bitterness that some of the Europeans gamers are feeling over the late release of the handheld.  Plus, it's rumored that Microsoft may make the Xbox 360 connectable to the DS and PSP, as I posted last month.  It's pretty unlikely that Microsoft would make anything connectable to their main rival, Sony...but Nintendo is a different situation.  If it is indeed true for the DS, that could sway a number of potential buyers as well.~

Marvel and Microsoft to produce game

Xbox360tag_3It was announced yesterday at the Comic-Con International that Marvel Enterprises has given Microsoft exclusive worldwide rights to make massively multiplayer online role-playing games with Marvel comic book characters.  The game will be exclusively produced for Microsoft's upcoming game console, the Xbox 360.  Most times, MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-player games) are developed for the PC.

What does this mean to you?  If you were anxiously waiting for a MMORPG that featured Marvel comic characters (especially after last month's annoucement from DC Comics), you have to buy an Xbox 360.  Considering the success of City of Heroes (another MMORPG), this is a huge coup for Microsoft.

Router functions dropped from PS3

If you were looking forward to using the PS3 as a home router, sorry Charlie.  President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi has announced that Sony has dropped the router functions from the PS3.
Mr. Kutaragi told Nikkei Electronics that the original functionality would have made the PS3 too costly to manufacture (and quite frankly, the machine doesn't need anything else to make it more expensive!)

via| GamesIndustrybiz.com

~I hope that's all they're dropping from the console.  I'm still curious as to how they plan on keeping the price at $399 and include everything plus the Blu-Ray drive.~

P2P becomes profitable for PC gamers

Due to a deal signed by Wurld Media and Trymedia, now video game players will be able to legally download PC games and earn cash back for sharing them via P2P.  P2P site, Peer Impact announced that they have signed a contract that will allow more than 1,000 games to be available to Wurld Media subscribers.  The service is currently in beta testing, but should be available within the next couple of weeks.

Members who share the purchased title through the P2P network will then earn cash back just by simply leaving their computer on and someone purchasing a game from your computer.  Peer Impact has a similar service with music.

Founded in 2002, Trymedia titles span across genres from casual games like "Diner Dash" and "Rock and Roll Jeopardy," to the action-filled "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - Developer's Cut" and fantasy role-playing games like "Warlords Battlecry III." The majority of titles in the catalog are available for under $20.

Most of Trymedia's games are also offered on a try-before-you-buy basis, which lets members test drive games before they commit to a purchase. source: Gaming Blog - CNet.com

Web browsers and movie downloads for PS3?

Ps3_3Sony Computer Entertainment America boss, Kaz Hirai, discussed the possibilities of web browsing and movie downloads via the PS3.  In an interview with gaming magazine EGM, Mr. Hirai acknowledged that with the increasing adoption of HDTV, web browsing on a game console is more practical.  However, he stated that the release of a web browser would depend on consumer demand.

He also discussed the fact that movie downloads were a feature considered for the PS2 in 1999, but the network infrastructure was not available to support it. "Once we have the infrastructure and we have the technology, then you're good to go," he continued. "You've got to have both sides of the equation."

via| Pro-G

~Listen....the PS3 is rumored to cost $399 (that's before purchasing the separate hard drive).  For that much money, it needs to be able to browse the web, download movies, do homework, clean the tub, AND play Madden.~

Special Edition PSP?

SpecialpspJoystiq is reporting the possible release of a "Special Edition Silver PSP"

"According to Video Games Life a silver PSP has popped up on the latest Japanese trade price listings (where retailers can access products at wholesale quantities and prices). However, the article then goes on to mention that there was no price or release date listed."

via| Joystiq.com

~I realize that Sony needs to do something to boost sales in order to beat the hold that the Nintendo DS has on the Japanese market, but releasing something this ugly?  Hopefully this is just a rumor.~

Etch-A-Sketch on cell phones?

EtchOk..I'm not exacty sure who has been dying to play Etch-A-Sketch on their cell phone, but whoever has, they will get their opportunity....IF they live in the UK.  A company name In-Fusio has adapted the nearly 50-year old game for cell phones.  Cell phone carrier Orange, will offer the game for many of their phones.

I bet you're just dying to know how to play, right?  Well, users will use their key pad in place of those unforgettable white knobs.  In-Fusio did manage to do one thing to improve the game....cell phone users will be able to save up to three of their drawings.  Unfortunately, users will not be able to shake the cell phone to make the drawing disappear, they will just have to press 0 and the phone will vibrate.

Microsoft may license Xbox Software

Bill Gates hinted today that Microsoft may be considering the licensing of the software underlying the Xbox to outside companies in an attempt to increase the Xbox's market share. There is a possibility that they will offer the "basic software" for Xbox similar to the way they allowed other companies to install Windows operating systems on their computers.

"Gates hasn't offered specifics about the kind of software or which companies would be involved. He also hasn't said whether the arrangement will involve manufacturers making products other than game machines, such as digital consumer electronics gadgets that combine PC functions with home appliances." souce: Associated Press

Xbox 360 may eventually use HD DVD Drive?

At yesterday's press conference with Toshiba, Bill Gates announced thXbox360tag_1e following:

“The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format,” Gates confirmed. “We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.” source: TeamXbox

~Sony's PS3 will ship with a Blu-Ray drive and will most likely be an important factor in the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD "war".  Although Bill Gates has announced that Microsoft is neutral in their support of either format, aligning themselves with HD-DVD would give Toshiba a much better chance of becoming the winning format.~
