Liam Neeson confirmed as voice of Aslan

ThelionthewitchComic Con news - Liam Neeson has been confirmed as the voice of Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia movie (release date: December 9th).  I love The Chronicles of Narnia and am re-reading all of the books....hopefully I'll be finished before the first movie comes out.  I remember crying as a child when I first read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, so I'm very excited that Hollywood has decided to make it into a movie.

Casting for this movie is very important and I was very pleased when it was announced that Tilda Swinton was cast as the White Witch and Liam Neeson is a good choice for the voice of Aslan, even though Brian Cox's (recently seen in Troy and The Bourne Supremacy) distinctive voice would have been a good fit as well.  Until recently, it was assumed that he would be the voice for Aslan....not sure why it has been changed.  I took a look at IMDB and didn't see Aslan listed..anyone know why or am I blind?

Comic Con gets exclusive Harry Potter trailer

HpottergofFirst things first....I'm loving that poster.  Ok, back to business...

All you Harry Potter fans know that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be released this year on November 18.  Well, the lucky folks who attended the San Diego Comic Con were able to get a sneak peek at the movie including:

"a nightshot of Hogwarts and talk of the pending tournament where other schools will be invited to participate. Clips shown included unfinished CGI on a carriage-like vehicle and some creatures and also offered the first shots of the new teacher for dark arts, Mad Eye Moody. One scene included was Harry's talk with a put-out Ron about how he did not submit his name for the tournament, but he was chosen anyway. There was also a shot of the big dance, with Harry, Ron and Hermione all spiffed up. Dragons, mermaids and a dash of Hagrid rounded out the exclusive look." source: Coming Soon.net

Netflix TV ad campaign

In an attempt to maintain its hold on the online rental market, Netflix has launched its first new TV commercials since 2003.  Netflix has managed to stay atop of the market (recently taking on the now defunct Walmart Online customers) while fending off attacks from Blockbuster's and rumors of Amazon.com entering the industry.  The five commercials will air on broadcast and cable TV well into next year.

~This has nothing to do with Netflix's campaign, but I once kept a Netflix movie for almost TWO years.  TWO years.  What's so pathetic about that (if that wasn't pathetic enough), was that I never watched it.~

Amazon purchases CustomFlix

Last week, Amazon purchased a DVD on demand company called CustomFlix.  The company produces and sells independently produced DVDs and its purchase is causing yet more speculation that Amazon may entering the rental business.  Amazon's entry into the rental business has been rumored for months with many hoping to see them give Netflix and Blockbuster's online service a run for their money.

Beta Player is now officially TCPMP

My favorite PDA music and movie player has officially changed its name from Beta Player to TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player).  TCPMP is an open-source media player for Palm and Windows Mobile devices.

I have used this program pretty much since I first purchased my Axim.  I've never had encountered a problem and it beats the Windows Media player included with the Axim by a MILE.  I also prefer it to the RealPlayer that is included with my Treo 650.  If you would like to try it out, you can download the Palm version and the Windows Mobile.

Roger Ebert gives Fantastic Four ONE star

JohnnystormEven though the dialogue in the trailer is rather cheesy, I've been looking forward to the latest comic book to hit the big screen, Fantastic Four. I decided to go online this evening and see what the critics gave it....and to my surprise, Roger Ebert blessed it with ONE star.  Here's the last sentence of his review:

And the really good superhero movies, like "Superman," "SpiderMan 2" and "Batman Begins," leave "Fantastic Four" so far behind that the movie should almost be ashamed to show itself in the same theaters.

After reading this and remembering the trailer, I almost want to stay home and keep our hard-earned money in our pockets.  I'm usually not one to listen to the critics (after all, they all panned the greatest movie of all time, Pootie Tang), but I might have to do it this time.

Intel invests in movie distribution company

ClickstarOne of my favorite actors, Morgan Freeman and Intel have announced that they are teaming up for a joint venture to distribute movies to consumers over the Internet before they are released on DVD.  The company will be called ClickStar Inc. and was formed by the actor and producer Lori McCreary.

"Freeman said his deal with Intel should avoid those pitfalls by giving customers a "simple, easy and attractive" alternative to piracy.

"We're going to bypass what the music industry had to come up with, and that's to get ahead of the whole piracy thing," Freeman told reporters at Sun Valley after making his presentation, which was closed to the press." source: Associated Press

The company has been in talks with several major studios, but have yet to sign any to a deal.

Web browsers and movie downloads for PS3?

Ps3_3Sony Computer Entertainment America boss, Kaz Hirai, discussed the possibilities of web browsing and movie downloads via the PS3.  In an interview with gaming magazine EGM, Mr. Hirai acknowledged that with the increasing adoption of HDTV, web browsing on a game console is more practical.  However, he stated that the release of a web browser would depend on consumer demand.

He also discussed the fact that movie downloads were a feature considered for the PS2 in 1999, but the network infrastructure was not available to support it. "Once we have the infrastructure and we have the technology, then you're good to go," he continued. "You've got to have both sides of the equation."

via| Pro-G

~Listen....the PS3 is rumored to cost $399 (that's before purchasing the separate hard drive).  For that much money, it needs to be able to browse the web, download movies, do homework, clean the tub, AND play Madden.~

New mutant in X-Men 3?

X2unitedposterbigThere could be a new mutant in the next X-Men movie.  X-Men 3 is currently in pre-production (due to come out next year) and the franchise is getting a new director, Brett Ratner (known for his Rush Hour movies and dating tennis star Serena Williams).  In an attempt to putting his personal stamp on the movie, it's being reported that he may be introducing a brand-new mutant.

"A source tells Pagesix.com the mutant will be, "An unbelievably hot and sexy hooker. Her super power is that she secretes a pheromone that helps her to seduce men. She can seduce anyone."" source: IMDB

Sin City fans...prepare to pay up

SincityWere you a fan of Robert Rodriguez's Sin City? Can't wait for the DVD release?  Well, I have good news and bad news for you:

GOOD NEWS:  the DVD release date is August 16th.  This is sure to be a DVD with tons of extras (behind the scenes footage, making-of featurettes, all that good stuff). Or will it?  Apparently not.

BAD NEWS: Once again, movie fans will be have to face the decision to pay up twice for the same movie just so they can view the many extras associated with the movie.  A bare bones release of Sin City will be released on August 16th and the "deluxe" DVD promised by Robert Rodriguez won't be released until late sometime in 2005 or even in 2006.  The deluxe version is to "include the next installment of Rodriguez's 10 Minute Film School series and a programming option that will allow viewers to separate and restore each story to its original length", along with a number of other features.

via| ign.com

~Of course, consumers are not "forced" to purchase both DVDs, but for true fans of a particular movie, it does create a dilemma.  I own about 25,345 different versions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, because of these "deluxe and extended" editions, so I'm a little bitter right now.  But even though I enjoyed Sin City and will purchase it, I'll be doing one of two things:

1.  Renting the bare bones release from Netflix.com and maybe purchasing the deluxe later.
2.  Just purchasing the bare bones release in August.

Either way, I'm not buying two DVDs!!~

Over 100,000 UMD films sold

Umd_1Sales of Sony UMDs (films for the Sony PSP) have topped 100,000.  This figure does not include the Spider-Man 2 UMD that was bundled with many PSPs.  Just this week, independent movie company Anchor Bay announced six films that will be released on August 23rd.  Halloween, Evil Dead, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll (personal favorite), Time Bandits, and Blood: The Last Vampire will retail for $19.98.

In other UMD news, it was confirmed that "MAYBE" 25 movies would be available for the European PSP launch on September 1.

UPDATE: Sony has corrected erroneous reports.  Over 200,000 UMD films have been sold.

"Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony representative said that the reports citing the 100,000 figures had misconstrued comments made by the company regarding sales, which were intended to mean that some titles had topped 100,000 sales, rather than indicating sales across the entire range."

Can I have a DVD with that Big Mac?

HamburgerMcDonalds is currently testing a DVD rental service in some of its restaurants.  For a $1 a day, you can rent a McDVD and soon you will be able to rent across country.  Yes!  It's everything you've dreamed of....you can rent Happy Gilmore in Washington D.C. and drop it off in Philadelphia a couple of days later while renting something else...(all the while ordering tons of nutritious food from Mickey D's).

"Rentals are primarily the top 40 new releases, cost $1 a night for each (paid by credit card only) and are due by 10 p.m. the following day. If a customer keeps the disc, they are charged $1 a day until the disc is returned or 25 days have passed, when the renter becomes the owner."

Read more at Wired.

~First the music downloads and the photo kiosks, now a DVD rental service?  What's next, an in-store beauty salon?  Ooohhh....what about a place where I can get my nails done?~

Vin Diesel starring in Hitman movie

HitmanThe Hollywood Reporter and Variety are reporting that Vin Diesel is set to star as Agent 47 in Hitman, a movie based on the popular game of the same name.  It's also rumored that the actor's video game company is trying to attain the game license in order to play Agent 47 in future games.

~I believe I spent an entire Saturday playing Hitman on my PC.  The game is violent and violently addictive.  I would definitely pay to see this in the theater and I can see why Vin Diesel would be a good choice.~

VHS going the way of Beta

Big-name retailers, Target and Walmart are slowly reducing their stock of VHS movies as demand of DVD increases.  Stores such as Best Buy and Circuit City have completely stopped selling VHS movies in their stores.  However, Walmart states that they are not completely phasing out VHS movies since "customers are not ready for that yet". ~It appears that the majority of people still buying VHS are buying children's movies since they probably haven't upgraded the VCR in the children's room to a DVD player.  I remember the times when having a TV in your room as a kid was considered a luxury!~

Toshiba develops recordable high-def DVD

Toshiba announced today that they have developed the technology to mass produce recordable high-definition DVDs.  This new technology will enable the manufacture of single-recording HD-DVD disks with 15-gigabyte storage capacity.

Optical disc makers Hitachi Maxell and Mitsubishi Kagaku said they would start marketing the HD-DVD-R discs next spring when Toshiba begins selling HD-DVD recorders.

This is the latest advance in the "war" between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray technology.  The Blu-Ray disc has the capability of storing 50GB compared to HD-DVDs 30GB read-only discs.  However, HD-DVD is cheaper to produce because of its similarity to current DVDs.

~It would be great if they could just finally sit down and agree on a common standard instead of introducing two new technologies.  However, it doesn't look that's happening.  Since we'll definitely be buying the PS3 (that comes equipped with Blu-Ray), you know whose corner I'm in.  I certainly can't afford to have three DVD technologies in my home, the current DVDs, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray.  I imagine that most households feel the same as well.  Most households won't even think about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray for the first couple of years of their debut into the market.~

R.I.P. - DVD Decrypter

The creator of the very popular DVD ripping software, DVD Decrypter, was issued a cease and desist letter from an "unnamed company".

Identifying himself as "Lightening UK", the creator submitted a letter to cdfreaks.com stating the details of the situation. Apparently, DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0 is the last version that will ever be developed.  He received a hand-delivered letter and he has been instructed not to give any further support, answer any emails or posts to forum…nothing, nada, zip!  He has to turn the website over to this company by the end of the week and contact all sites that he is aware of that's hosting the software.

Here's a quote from the letter regarding fighting the studio: "If 321 Studios can't do it with millions, what chance do I have with £50?!"

Check out the entire letter.

~I know many people have enjoyed his contribution to the DVD community and updated versions of the software will be missed.  I'm pretty sure people are backing up their copy of the software as we speak.  Not me, of course… I just want that to be known in case an "unnamed company" happens upon this blog.

First Reviews of Batman Begins

Poster_batmanbeginsBatman Begins is getting relatively good reviews which should be great news for fans of the franchise.  Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter states:

“for Nolan to turn Batman Begins into such a smart, gritty, brooding, visceral experience is astonishing.  Truly, Batman does begin again.”

David Edwards of the London Daily Mirror describes it as “a violent and truly scary film and definitely not one for the kids.  For grown-ups, though, it could well be the ultimate superhero movie.”

Check out the movie trailers:  High Def Trailer and the regular Trailer.

~Of course I'll be seeing it next weekend.  I've been looking forward to this one for a while.  I hope that this is the one that will save what's left of the franchise. ~

New high-speed standard will enable HDTV streaming

Due to bandwidth limitations, streaming HD content over the web has been impractical.  That's all about to change due to the new high-speed standard called VDSL2 that was ratified by the International Telecommunication Union.

VDSL2 is said to reach speeds of up to 100Mbps downstream and upstream.  Currently, cable and DSL can only reach up to 3Mbps and DVDs take up 4-7Mbps and MPEG-2 HDTV content requires over 19Mbps. This new standard can operate on standard copper telephone lines with existing equipment.

BellSouth has already announced plans to use this with systems they've installed over the past 10 years.

6:15 pm - Shrek 2

8:00 pm - Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

10:30 pm - Bad Boys II

1:00 am - Identity

~All four of these movies should look great on HD.  I've already seen Shrek 2 in HD and it is truly stunning.  I believe this is the premiere of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on HD, so if I'm home I will definitely watch it or at least record it on my HD DVR.~

RatDVD- Yet another threat to movie industry

Right now, in order to rip a movie to burn to DVD, you have to go through a process of decrypting the movie and then shrinking it so it can fit on the blank DVD.  Most movies today are larger than the size of a single-sided DVD, so the amount of shrinking varies.  For a movie with tons of extras or one that is over 2 hours, a decent amount of shrinking will occur.  This shrinking has an effect on the quality of the movie.  That's why many people just strip the movie of its extras and just burn the movie.  Doing this requires very little shrinking or no shrinking at all, which means the picture quality is either as close or a perfect match to the original DVD.  Got it?

Well, there's a new software called RatDVD that shrinks movies into small "packages" and retains all the extras.  One of the developers of the software said it could be used to archive one's DVD collection on a PC, but admitted that people could also use it to easily trade movies online.

~The group that created this software is remaining anonymous and that's a smart decision. The movie industry is going to go gunning for these guys as soon as this software takes off.  Although the software doesn't actually remove the encryption on the DVDs, it does facilitate in the easy trading of movies and that's something the movie industry has been trying shut down.  Before people would only trade the movie...now they can get the entire DVD, extras and all.  I smell big trouble for RatDVD.~

Peerflix

Have some old DVDs you don't want? You may want to take a look at Peerflix. Peerflix is an online service that facilitates the trading of DVDs.  If you want to get rid of your copy of Nothing But Trouble, you could trade it with someone who owns Waterworld, if you were so inclined.

When you first sign up, you list all your DVDs and list DVDs you want.  Peerflix sends you 4 mailers and will send more when you run low.  You earn "peerbux" which enable you to trade (you can also buy these).  Each movie is assigned a certain amount of peerbux and you receive the value when you trade the movie.  You pay just 99 cents a transaction, plus postage.  Right now the company is offering one free DVD when you fully activate your account.

Read more if you would like to see a review of the service.

Da Vinci Code film plans rejected.

Almost everyone I know has read the Da Vinci Code (even people I wasn't even aware COULD read).  The film based on the book will most likely be one of the most highly anticipated films of 2006.  Based on the blockbuster novel and starring Tom Hanks, it's sure to be a huge hit.  Unfortunately, that doesn't matter to Britain's Westminster Abbey.

The producers of the film wanted to film in the 940-year old London abbey because of its presence in the novel...however, churc officials rejected their plans, claiming Da Vinci Code "theologically unsound" and announced it would be inappropriate for any filming from the movie to take place in Westminster Abbey.

If you missed my earlier post, here's a link to view the trailer.

Moviegoers staying home

Link: With Popcorn, DVD's and TiVo, Moviegoers Are Staying Home - New York Times.

PopcornInteresting article on Nytimes.com about the impact of DVDs and Tivo on box-office attendance.  I love movies.  We own over 300 DVDs, have a home theater set up, ReplayTv, and Comcast's HD DVR.  Even with a great setup to watch movies, we still go to the movies a LOT.  During the summer, it's about 3-4 times a month and maybe 1-2 times a month outside the summer.  You really can't duplicate the moviegoing experience if you have a decent theater in your vicinity.

However, I do believe that DVDs have made a big impact on movies.  There have been many times where we've decided not to go see a movie simply because we were on the fence and knew it would be out on DVD in a couple of months anyway.  With the decreased amount of time between theatrical release and the DVD release, this will happen more and more with moviegoers.  I remember when it used to take a year or so for movies to come out and that was the deciding factor in going to go see an "on-the-fence" movie.

Another factor is the price.  Ticket and food prices keep going up.  Right now, we pay $7.00 for a matinee showing (which is usually the only time we go, can't stand the teenagers at night!).  The food prices are ridiculous.  $9.25 for some nachos and soda!  Granted, it's enough nachos to feed the latest Menudo group, but still....almost ten bucks for nachos is crazy.  The prices to go see these movies keeps going up, but it seems the quality of the movies keeps going down. Go figure.

Go figure.
